The Foundation inaugurated the Convocation Series in 1982 which was designed to call attention to the various leading theological issues of the day by hosting some of the more outstanding intellectual figures in these various fields. In 1984, Lord Robert Runcie, then Archbishop of Canterbury, officially endorsed the Foundation’s ministry course on behalf of the Church of England and commissioned Lord John Tinsley, then Bishop of Bristol and sometime Professor of Theology at Leeds University, to sit on the Foundation’s Board of Trustees. Bishop Tinsley read out the official statement from the Archbishop at the inauguration of the new Anglican-Roman Catholic-Lutheran program and thus commenced a long-standing relationship. Bishop Tinsley continued to serve on the Board and to teach on the faculty at the Foundation until his retirement, at which time Lord Runcie, continuing his loyalty to the Foundation, appointed Bishop David Tustin, suffragan Bishop of Lincoln in England, to serve in a similar capacity.
By maintaining a firm commitment to educating those in ministry through the nurturing of an ongoing community of learning, the Foundation provides Convocations in keeping with its established reputation for excellence and relevance.
In the spring of 2000, in response to the untimely death of Lord Runcie, the Foundation established The Lord Robert Runcie Convocation Lecture Series in honor and recognition of the loyalty and support he showed to the Foundation’s work in ministry education.
