DOCTOR OF PSYCHOLOGY
(specialization)
Clinical Pastoral Psychotherapy
Description
The Graduate Theological Foundation has been involved with professional education in ministry for nearly fifty years and is pleased to offer this Doctor of Psychology with a clinical component. In this clinically-based program, the participant will encounter a two-fold emphasis, namely, (1) an unrelenting commitment to the academic study of clinical pastoral psychotherapy as embodied particularly in eight classical schools of psychotherapy, and (2) the clinical pastoral application to the counseling situation. By combining academic training and pastoral awareness, this program will offer a unique opportunity for ministry professionals to integrate psychotherapeutic modes of analysis with clinical application in individual and family counseling.
Participants
The Doctor of Psychology program in Clinical Pastoral Psychotherapy is open to those who have been actively engaged in some form of professional ministry (parish, social service, community outreach, chaplaincy, etc.) for at least five years and who meet the admission requirements listed for this degree. The degree is offered to credentialed ministry professionals and is not designed for those just entering the field of counseling. Professional counseling and ministry credentials are viewed as prerequisites to pursue this course of study with the Foundation.

Baccalaureate degree or equivalent validated by a transcript
Master’s degree in a cognate field of ministry or counseling validated by a transcript
Five years of full-time professional experience in pastoral ministry or counseling

Course Requirements (E-Tutorials)
The student must take all eight of the E-Tutorials covering the classical schools of psychotherapy. These E-Tutorials should be taken in the following sequence.
Residency Requirement
The residency requirement consists of a five day on-site Clinical Skills and Assessment Practicum (CSAP) after completion of all or most of the E-Tutorial required courses. The Clinical Practicum is hosted at the Foundation’s administrative offices in Mishawaka, Indiana. The student is responsible for accommodations and meal costs during the week. The dates for the practicum are arranged individually between the student and the Office of Student Services.
Residency Papers
Each participant is to bring five case studies from his/her professional experience in counseling to the clinical practicum for group discussion and comment. They are to be formally written and multiple copies may be made on site as needed during the practicum. The final paper (15-20 pages) is to be a re-write of one or more of the case studies brought by the participant following the clinical practicum reflecting insights gained from the review and comment assessment of the case study or studies.
