Khutb Mohammad Uddin is Abu Hamid Mohammed al-Ghazzali Professor of Islamic Studies. His specialty is Islamic spirituality and Western medicine. He is the author of a forthcoming book on Jalaluddin Rumi, the Muslim mystic poet of Afghanistan from the 12th century. Dr. Uddin, a Muslim native of India, was educated at Osmania University in Hyderabad, India, from which he holds the bachelor's degree and the Doctor of Medicine. He completed three years of internship and residency in psychiatry at the University of Missouri where he also held a fellowship in child and adolescent psychiatry. He has been in private practice for more than 18 years in South Bend, Indiana, and surrounding areas. He has been a Staff Psychiatrist at Memorial Hospital in South Bend, Indiana, and he is also affiliated with various mental health agencies in the area. Dr. Uddin is involved in volunteer work and helps with many programs in the community. He holds membership in the American Psychiatric Association and the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry. He incorporates Western psychology as well as Eastern philosophy and the Sufi way of healing into his practice, and speaks to the public and interested groups on Sufism. In 2004, Dr. Uddin was awarded the Ph.D. honoris causa by the Foundation.
